Information We Collect
Parent Account Information
When a parent signs in, Reading Coach may collect or receive:
- Email address or account identifier from the sign-in provider (Google Sign-In or Sign in with Apple).
- Authentication identifiers needed to keep the parent signed in.
This information is used to authenticate the parent and connect app data to the correct account.
Child Profile Information
Parents may create child profiles. A profile may include:
- Child name or nickname.
- Grade or reading level.
- Avatar or profile image, if a parent chooses to add one.
- Reading goals and settings.
Parents may choose to use a nickname instead of a child's full legal name if they prefer to limit identifying information.
Reading Progress
Reading Coach stores reading progress, such as:
- Reading sessions completed.
- Passage identifiers and titles.
- Reading speed, accuracy, and elapsed time.
- Missed words and repeated-reading progress.
- Comprehension quiz results.
- Streaks and dashboard progress.
This information is used to show progress to parents and personalize the reading experience.
Speech Recognition and Audio
Reading Coach uses speech recognition so the app can compare spoken words to the reading passage.
- Reading Coach does not store raw child audio.
- Reading Coach may process speech temporarily during a reading session.
- Reading Coach stores reading results, not the audio recording itself.
Speech processing may occur on-device or through Apple's services depending on device capabilities and settings. Parents can manage microphone and speech recognition permissions in iOS Settings.
AI Features — Google Gemini (Google LLC)
Reading Coach uses Google Gemini AI (via Firebase) for the following features. These features require parent consent and can be disabled in Settings.
Passage Generation
When a parent or child generates a reading passage, the app sends the following to Google Gemini:
- The topic or idea typed by the child.
- The child's reading level and grade.
- Passage length or format instructions.
- Safety and age-appropriate content instructions.
Retelling Assessment
After reading, if the child completes an optional retelling, the app sends the following to Google Gemini:
- The child's spoken retelling, transcribed to text by Apple Speech Recognition. No audio is transmitted.
- The passage text the child was reading.
For all AI features, the app does not send personally identifiable information, including:
- Child full name.
- Raw audio.
- Exact birthdate.
- School name.
- Home address.
- Parent contact information.
- Account identifiers.
Parents can enable or disable AI features at any time in the app's Settings under "AI & Privacy".
Subscription Information
Reading Coach uses Apple's In-App Purchase system (StoreKit) to manage subscriptions. Apple handles all payment processing. Reading Coach receives only subscription status information, such as whether the account has an active Reading Coach Plus subscription.
Reading Coach does not receive or store payment details or credit card numbers.
How We Use Information
Reading Coach uses information to:
- Provide and improve reading practice features.
- Save child profiles and reading progress.
- Show progress, streaks, and reading history.
- Generate age-appropriate reading passages, illustrations, and word definitions.
- Manage subscriptions and free usage limits.
- Secure the app and prevent abuse.
- Respond to parent support or privacy requests.
How We Share Information
Reading Coach does not sell personal information.
Reading Coach may share information with service providers only as needed to operate the app, including:
- Apple, for App Store purchases, StoreKit subscriptions, device permissions, and system speech recognition.
- Firebase/Google, for authentication (Google Sign-In), database storage, file storage, app security, AI generation features (Google Gemini), and crash/error reporting (Firebase Crashlytics).
These services process information according to their own terms and privacy practices.
Reading Coach may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the security, rights, or safety of users or the app.
Children's Privacy (COPPA)
Reading Coach is intended for family use and is designed to be used by children with parent involvement. We are committed to protecting children's privacy in accordance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar laws.
Parents control profile creation. Subscription purchases are handled through Apple's native In-App Purchase flow, which includes Apple's own parental approval mechanisms.
We do not knowingly collect more personal information from children than is necessary to provide the app's features. Parents may contact us at any time to:
- Ask what information is stored for their child.
- Request correction or deletion of child information.
- Ask questions about data practices.

Data Retention and Deletion
Reading Coach keeps account, profile, and reading progress information while the account is active or as needed to provide the app.
Parents can delete a child profile in the app. Deleting a profile removes that profile and its associated reading progress data from the app.
Parents can delete their full account directly in the app under Settings → Parent Controls → Delete Account. This permanently removes all profiles, reading progress, and associated data. Alternatively, parents may contact us at readingcoach.support@gmail.com.
Some information may remain in backups or logs for a limited period as required for security, legal, or operational reasons.
Security
Reading Coach uses reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect information. No system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
Parents should keep their Apple ID, app account, and device passcode secure.
Parent Choices
Parents can:
- Choose what child profile information to enter.
- Use nicknames instead of full legal names.
- Manage microphone and speech recognition permissions in iOS Settings.
- Manage or cancel subscriptions through their Apple Account settings.
- Delete child profiles in the app.
- Delete their full account directly in the app under Settings → Parent Controls → Delete Account.
- Enable or disable AI features under Settings → Parent Controls → AI & Privacy.
- Contact us for any other privacy requests.

Reading Coach is operated from the United States. If you use the app outside the United States, information may be processed in the United States or other locations where service providers operate.
